Prevent Infection Cutting Nails Properly

Cutting your nails is something that you have been doing since you were a child, either it was done for you or on your own. While this hygiene habit may seem simple, there is a proper way to cut your nails. With anything that has a right way, there is also a wrong way.

Frequent Cutting Can Be Harmful

Many people prefer to have their manicures completed at a nail salon. This is a great way to pamper yourself, but it can also damage your nails if it is not done correctly. Many professional nail artists push back or even cut the cuticles on the nails.

This may give your hands a polished appearance, but according to the American Academy of Dermatology, it is one of the most harmful nail care practices to date. Your cuticles keep your nail roots safe from bacteria. When they are cut, it opens that area for bad bacteria to take root and trigger an infection.

Soak Before Cutting

The start and finish of your nail grooming session play a big part in the health of your hands. Before you cut, take time to soak your nails in warm water. This will soften the nails and make them easier to trim.

Cutting Your Nails

It is a good practice to cut your nails straight across. You can also cut them at a slight curve, but only for your fingers. Avoid cutting your toenails at a curve, or you put yourself at risk of an ingrown nail. Long nails may look nice, but they are not the healthiest option. Shorter nails are less prone to breakage and are also more hygienic. In reality, the also look better.

Clean Your Nail Tools

The tools that you use to clean and cut your nails should also be cleaned on a regular basis. Make a habit of sterilizing them at least once a month. The best way is to use a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water to clean them.

Filing Your Nails

File your nails properly. Avoid using a back and forth sawing motion, filing should only be done in one direction. This will give the ends of your nails a smooth, even look. It will also help your nails to stay strong. Once you are done grooming your nails, also make sure to use a good moisturizer on your hands.
